Fort Matanzas National Monument
904-471-0116
8635 A1A South
St. Augustine, Florida 32080

A free ferry ride takes visitors across the Matanzas River to a guided tour of small fort built by the Spanish to protect the southern approaches to St. Augustine. We like this tour better than Fort Castillo de San Marcos (the “Big Fort”) in St. Augustine. This National Monument is on US Highway A-1-A approximately 15 miles south on St. Augustine and 5 miles north of Washington Oaks State Gardens.

The fort supported a small garrison.

The National Park Service offers a free ferry shuttle.
